A hacker stole US drone and tank documents because nobody changed the default router password

A hacker stole US drone and tank documents because nobody changed the default router password As long as people continue to ignore critical security patches and do not change the default passwords on their devices, high-profile hacks like this one will remain common and could have lasting consequences. A computer hacker was able to infiltrate the computer network of a Nevada Air Force base because nobody changed the default password of a Netgear router on its network. The hacker then made off with sensitive documents about the Air Force's MQ-9 Reaper drone and put them up for sale on a dark web marketplace. The documents were discovered online by security research firm  Recorded Future who spoke with the hacker to confirm their validity. They determined the breach took place as a result of a well known Netgear Router Vulnerability and a default FTP password on that router. The stolen documents themselves are not classified, but could still pose a security threat if they

FCC to vote on rule that will charge consumers to hear grievances

Image
FCC to vote on rule that will charge consumers to hear grievances Why It Matters:-   The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was created to handle and regulate communications in any broadcast form. Part of its duties is to hear complaints from consumers in issues of abuse. However, on Thursday the commission will vote on a rule that will severely restrict this function. According to the Proposed Rules, informal complaints from consumers to the FCCwill be forwarded to the company that is the subject of the grievance. The obvious problem with this is that by the time a consumer is fed up enough to bother contacting the FCC, they have already exhausted all avenues of resolution with the company in question. Sending them back to the offending firm defeats the whole purpose of contacting the agency in the first place. The only remaining option would be to file a formal complaint and pay a $225 fee to have the commission consider the claim. The FCC says that the proposed rule

Aquatic Weeds To Combat Oil Spills

Image
DFossil fuels are the cause and solution for many of the challenges posed by human development. The 1st industrial revolution, in the 19th century, wouldn’t have existed without coal and the 2nd one, in the early 20th century, wouldn’t have evolved without oil. However, these power sources have their own downside—from the soot and smog that polluted the Dickensian London to global warming and the plastic island and oil spills in the seas. While countries and companies work on the development of alternative power sources, in the here and now we need a pragmatic approach to the most immediate damages. Along those lines, oil spills are still one of the most severe environmental disasters as proved by some of the accidents over the last few years. Currently, there are several methods to combat them, such as oil booms, chemical dispensers and sorbents like sawdust. However, nature may provide a different way to tackle the issue—two invasive aquatic ferns, Salvinia molesta  and Pistia Str

Korean tech giant Samsung has announced a major investment in artificial intelligence research in the UK. The company is to open an AI research lab in Cambridge, in a move that has been welcomed by the prime minister. The lab will join other Samsung centres dedicated to the topic, based in Moscow and Toronto. The technology is now seen as key to competing in many industries. The UK has been a hotspot for AI research. But there are concerns about a growing skills shortage. Samsung says the lab will focus on health and communication. Theresa May said the announcement was "a vote of confidence in the UK as a world leader in artificial intelligence" and would create high-skilled highly paid jobs. Industry v academia The new centre could recruit as many as 150 scientists - although Samsung is being quite vague about its precise plans. It will be led by Prof Andrew Blake, an AI pioneer who previously ran Microsoft's research lab in the same city.
